The vision of Irwin Allen was fully realizes in this first version of Lost In Space. The Jupiter 2 was called the Gemini 12...and unlike the aired version, the Robinson family actually landed on another planet, confronting peril after peril, including...a huge Cyclops, the discovery of a lost civilization, fierce lightning storms, and the treacherous crossing of an inland sea aboard the amphibious space chariot.

When the CBS network viewed No Place To Hide, They wanted the series to have a robot and a regular foe pitted against the Robinsons. Thus was added the robot and Dr Zachary Smith. In this new pilot, Dr. Smith, in the employ of a foreign government, realizes he is trapped on board the Jupiter 2 while sabotaging the robot...when the ship blasts off, his additional weight causes himself and the entire crew to be hopelessly Lost In Space!
